Need Oracle Remote DBA help ?

Oracle Certified Professional DBA with 10 years experience
available for remote database administration support.

Due the incredible improvements in telecommunication technology over the past few years,
it is now possible to supply Oracle remote DBA services remotely.

My first attempts at remote support were over a dial-up line in 1996 but let me rather focus on experiences that weren't painful.

With a secure VPN on the client's side, some basic tools such as Putty,
Quest's Toad, Oracle's Enterprise Manager (Db and Grid Control) and the functionality of email and SMS/text alerts,
I have been supporting clients locally and internationally since 2000.

My preferred platform is Unix, Windows can be done but makes life more difficult and it is a well known fact that DBAs like to make their life as easy as possible.

The reality of remote support is that even though in theory it is possible to do all support remotely,
it is advisable to spend some initial time at the client's site in order to get to know the infrastructure and people who will be instrumental in making the remote support contract feasible.

This time period will also be invaluable in setting up the telecommunication software and security protocols which will be used for remote support.

The human interface aspect of a client visit is vital in establishing relationships amongst colleagues who will end up communicating mostly by email, Skype or IM.

How can I assist you ?

Here's a list of Oracle technologies I have been involved with since I started as an Oracle DBA in 1996.

The usual suspects:
  • Oracle Database:
Software installation (Unix and Windows), database capacity planning, database creation and maintenance.
  • Oracle Backup and Recovery:
Struggled through the birth and coming-of-age of Oracle Enterprise Backup Utility (OEBU) and its later incarnation: RMAN.
I am currently using the RMAN duplication methodology to recreate a Production db to Dev and Test on a regular basis without hiccups.
I personally believe this to be the most important aspect of a DBA's responsibilities.
If your backup strategy is not implemented properly or recovery scenarios have not been tested,
you're putting your company's digital assets at risk.
  • Oracle tuning:
Thanks to ADDM and AWR this has become a much more pleasant task and I can assist in general database tuning
as well as SQL and PL/SQL tuning.
  • Upgrades:
    7 to 8, 8i to 9i, 9i to 10g and any release inbetween.
Special cases:
  • Oracle DataGuard:
    Formerly known as standby database.
I can vow for the effectiveness of a Physical Standby database as I've had to do a failover on a production system recently.
  • Oracle Streams:
    Challenging to put it mildly.
It can work if the transactional load is not too large and you don't mind applying patch after patch after patch.
  • Data Warehousing:
I can assist in the design and implementation of datamarts.
